Introducing a new series within The Human Condition substack: ASK THE PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSOR. Herein, I provide individualized commentary and guidance on questions related to human behavior as well as guidance on issues of how to succeed in college, graduate school, and beyond.
In my work as a psychology professor, across more than a quarter of a century, I’ve published over 100 academic pieces on various facets of human behavior (including 9 books) and have won numerous awards for teaching and for guiding students toward successful pathways (such as the SUNY Chancellor’s Awards for Teaching, Scholarly Activities, and Faculty Service, a NACADA award for Excellence in Academic Advising, as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award from the NorthEastern Evolutionary Psychology Society (NEEPS).
From this backdrop, I’ve concluded that I could actually be useful in helping people think about a broad array of issues regarding human behavior and psychology. I have published hundreds of articles on these issues at my Psychology Today blog, Darwin’s Subterranean World (with more than 8 million views as of September 2023)—including articles on topics such as love, prejudice, meaning, relationships, social interactions, emotions, and more—in addition to articles on various facets of the college/university experience (e.g., tips for succeeding as a first-year student, what professors really want students to get out of their education, simple tips for succeeding academically, etc.).
Have a question about human personality? Relationships? Social groups? Politics? Evolution and behavior? (e.g., why do I have such a hard time getting over the loss of a long-standing friendship?)
Have questions about getting into college? Getting into graduate school? Careers related to psychology? (e.g., what should I look for in a high-quality undergraduate psychology program?)

NOTE: My PhD is in Personality and Social Psychology and I am NOT trained or experienced as a clinical or otherwise therapy-based psychologist—so know that the thoughts here are, importantly, from the perspective of an academic and a professional behavioral scientist.
Note also that queries that are answered are answered publicly in the space for The Human Condition substack (with information about the questioner anonymized).
